Printer Not Printing Color

Is your printer printing black but no color, or is one color missing? Identify the affected color and run the right printer test.

Step 1

First: print the printer's own test page

If your printer has a built-in test page, print it first. This helps separate a printer-side color problem from a document or print-setting problem.

Black prints, but no colors appear

Possible areas to check:

  • Color, Mono, or Grayscale setting
  • color ink/toner status
  • cartridge/toner installation
  • printer-generated test page

Run CMYK Printer Test

One color is missing

Identify which channel is affected:

  • Cyan
  • Magenta
  • Yellow
  • Black

Run CMYK Printer TestRun Printer Nozzle Test

For inkjet printers, compare the CMYK result with the nozzle test.

All colors appear on the printer test page

The printer may be able to produce color normally. Check:

  • application print settings
  • Grayscale or Black and White mode
  • selected printer
  • document content
  • driver
  • paper and media settings

A normal printer test page does not prove the hardware is fine.

Step 2

Which Color Is Missing?

Cyan missing

Blues and greens may print incorrectly or disappear.

CMYK Printer Test

Magenta missing

Reds, pinks and purples may appear incorrect.

CMYK Printer Test

Yellow missing

Yellows and many greens or oranges may be affected.

CMYK Printer Test

Black missing

Use the dedicated black troubleshooting page instead of repeating those steps here.

Printer Not Printing Black

Step 3

What Does the Color Output Look Like?

Black prints, but no color

Check color versus mono or grayscale settings, color cartridge or toner status, and the printer-generated test page.

CMYK Printer Test

One color is completely missing

Identify whether cyan, magenta, yellow or black is affected, then compare channels.

CMYK Printer TestPrinter Nozzle Test

For inkjet printers, the nozzle test helps compare channel output.

Colors are very faint

Faint output can point to supply, draft settings, paper settings, or delivery. Compare general color and quality output.

Color Printer TestPrint Quality Test

Colors have gaps or streaks

Gaps or streaks can point to uneven delivery or quality problems. Choose the test that matches your printer type.

Printer Nozzle TestPrint Quality Test

Use the nozzle test for inkjet printers and the quality test for general output.

Colors are present but incorrect

This is a different problem from missing color. Continue on the wrong-color troubleshooting page.

Colors Wrong

Step 4

Check Color Settings

Before maintenance, check these settings.

  1. Color mode is enabled

  2. Grayscale or Black and White mode is disabled

  3. Draft or Economy mode is not selected

  4. Correct printer is selected

  5. Correct paper or media type is selected

  6. Print preview actually contains color

Setting names vary by printer, operating system and driver.

Don't replace every cartridge immediately.

Identify the affected channel first. Use the printer's own diagnostic page, then compare with the CMYK or nozzle test.

Step 5

Inkjet vs Laser

Inkjet

Possible causes:

  • low/empty color ink
  • cartridge installation issue
  • blocked or uneven nozzle output
  • protective seal on a new cartridge
  • printer settings

Run Printer Nozzle Test

The printer's built-in nozzle check is the preferred model-specific diagnostic when available.

Color Laser

Possible areas to check:

  • toner supply
  • cartridge installation
  • Color/Mono setting
  • print-quality settings
  • model-specific imaging/toner diagnostics

Run CMYK Printer Test

What PrinterInspect Can and Cannot Tell You

Can help identify:

  • all color output missing
  • one missing color channel
  • weak color output
  • nozzle gaps
  • color streaks
  • whether the problem appears on a standardized test

Cannot determine:

  • exact ink or toner level
  • failed cartridge electronics
  • failed printhead or other internal component
  • drum, transfer, or laser hardware failure
  • exact component responsible

Visual troubleshooting only. PrinterInspect cannot read ink or toner levels or identify a failed component.

FAQ

Color printing: questions

Why is my printer not printing color?

Missing color can come from color settings, supply, installation, nozzles, or document issues. Print the printer's own test page first to separate printer-side from document-side causes.

Why does my printer print black but not color?

Black often runs on a separate supply and settings path from color. Check color mode, color supplies, and the printer's own color test output.

Why is one color missing from my printer?

Identify whether cyan, magenta, yellow, or black is affected, then compare that channel with the CMYK test. For inkjet, also compare with the nozzle test.

Why is my cyan, magenta, or yellow ink not printing?

A missing cyan, magenta, or yellow channel can point to supply, installation, settings, or nozzle delivery. Identify the affected channel, then compare it on a CMYK test before replacing anything.

Why does my printer print color on the test page but not my document?

A working printer test page can point to document, application, color mode, selected printer, or driver settings. Check preview and grayscale settings.

Can a clogged nozzle cause missing colors?

Yes, blocked nozzles are one possible cause of missing color channels on inkjet printers. Confirm with a nozzle check rather than assuming a failed cartridge.

Why is my printer printing faded colors?

Faded color can point to low supply, draft mode, paper settings, or uneven delivery. Compare the Color Printer Test with the Print Quality Test.

Why is my color laser printer not printing color?

Check toner supply, cartridge installation, Color or Mono settings, quality settings, and model-specific diagnostics. Avoid opening internal components.
