Printer Not Printing Black

Is your printer printing color but not black, or is black text missing or faint? Check the black output and find the right test.

Step 1

First: print the printer's own test

Before changing settings or replacing ink, print the test page or nozzle check provided by your printer's control panel or manufacturer utility, if available.

Black pattern is completely missing

Possible areas to check:

  • black ink/toner supply
  • cartridge/toner installation
  • inkjet nozzle/printhead output
  • printer maintenance/settings

Run Printer Nozzle Test

Black pattern has gaps or broken lines

On inkjet printers, missing segments can indicate blocked or uneven nozzle output.

Run Printer Nozzle Test

Black pattern looks normal

If the printer's own diagnostic page prints black normally, check:

  • document content
  • selected printer
  • print mode
  • grayscale/color settings
  • application
  • print preview
  • driver/settings

Then print a simple black-text document.

Step 2

What Does Your Black Output Look Like?

No black prints, but color does

Color may still print.

Printer Nozzle TestBlack & White Printer Test

Black is gray or very faint

Check supply level, paper type, print quality/draft settings and printer-specific maintenance.

Black & White Printer TestPrint Quality Test

Black has white gaps

Especially relevant to inkjet printers.

Printer Nozzle Test

Black text is blurry

Edges look soft or doubled.

Printer Alignment TestPrint Quality Test

Black prints in a test page but not in a document

Check document, application and settings rather than immediately cleaning the printer.

Step 3

Inkjet vs Laser

Inkjet

Possible causes:

  • low/empty black ink
  • clogged or dried black nozzles
  • cartridge installation issue
  • protective seal/vent issue after replacement
  • print settings

Run Printer Nozzle Test

The printer's built-in nozzle check is the preferred model-specific diagnostic when available.

Laser

Possible areas to check:

  • toner supply
  • toner cartridge installation
  • print settings
  • model-specific print-quality diagnostics
  • imaging/toner system

Run Print Quality Test

Step 4

Quick Checks

  1. Check the printer's own test page for black output.

  2. Confirm black ink or toner status.

  3. Check cartridge installation and protective seals.

  4. Review grayscale and black-specific print settings.

  5. Check the document, application, and selected printer.

  6. Print a simple black-text document to compare.

  7. Run the printer's built-in nozzle check for inkjets.

Limits

What PrinterInspect Can and Cannot Tell You

Can help identify:

  • whether black prints at all
  • missing vs faint black output
  • nozzle gaps in black
  • general print-quality problems

Cannot determine:

  • exact ink/toner level
  • failed printhead
  • failed drum
  • transfer roller failure
  • fuser failure
  • electronic/control-board failure
  • exact hardware component responsible

Visual troubleshooting only. PrinterInspect cannot read ink or toner levels or identify a failed component.

FAQ

Black printing: questions

Why is my printer not printing black?

Black output can fail from supply, installation, nozzles, settings, or document issues. Print the printer's own test first to separate printer-side from document-side causes.

Why does my printer print color but not black?

Black runs on a separate supply and settings path from color. Check black ink or toner, black-specific settings, and nozzle output.

Why is black text missing from my prints?

Missing black text is worth checking against supply, grayscale settings, the application, and nozzle output.

Why is my black printing gray or faint?

Faint black is worth checking as possible low supply, draft mode, wrong paper settings, or uneven delivery.

Can empty color ink stop black from printing?

On some printers, an empty color cartridge can block all printing. Check all supply levels, not just black.

Why is black missing after changing the cartridge?

After a replacement, check that protective seals and tape were removed, vents are open, and the cartridge is correctly seated.

Should I clean the printhead?

Not as a first step. Identify the pattern first, run a nozzle check between attempts, and avoid repeated deep cleans automatically.

Can this page tell which part failed?

No. It narrows the visible symptom to the right test. Only the manufacturer's diagnostics can identify a failed component.
